Two Cultures and Health Disparities: Alaska Native’s Cardiovascular Outcomes

REACH director Kirk Dombrowski recently contributed to a study on the cultural and health dynamics of Alaska Natives. Wide health outcome disparities exist between Alaska Natives and non-AN relating to cardiovascular health. For instance, AN persons are much more likely to die from heart attack and stroke than non-AN populations. This study aimed at analyzing cultural determinants of health outcomes of the Yup’ik people. In particular, researchers examined the bi-cultural dynamics associated with Alaska Natives, referring to their Western and Yup’ik cultural influences.

The article “Bi-cultural dynamics for risk and protective factors for cardiometabolic health in an Alaska Native (Yup’ik) population” was published in November in PLoS One. You can find the full article here: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0183451.
